Taiwanese tech firm Hon Hai Technology Group or Foxconn partnered with Mitsubishi to manufacture their own line of EVs. Additionally, Foxconn is also on the hunt for a merger with Japanese auto giants Honda and Nissan to manufacture more.

Jun Seki, Chief Strategy Officer at Foxconn, kept mum about the details of their collaboration with Mitsubishi. However, the executive also said Japanese automakers made for attractive collaborators due to their attention to quality.

According to Reuters, Foxconn turned their attention to Japan due to rising competition from aggressive Chinese EV makers and their growing market shares around the world.

“Automakers are scattered all over the world,” said Seki. “We will of course work with all of these customers, but there are several points where we feel we have a strong affinity with Japan.”

FUTURE PLANS

After talks between Nissan and Honda fell through, Foxconn reportedly eyed this as an opportunity to propose a merger with both companies and Mitsubishi. It is rumoured that Nissan’s openness to collaborate with tech firms is referring to a partnership by Foxconn. The tech firm is allegedly interested in acquiring Nissan as a whole or acquiring a stake in the company despite not having spoken with the Japanese carmaker so far.

The company also plans to manufacture at least 6 new EV models domestically in Taiwan. This isn’t Foxconn’s first venture into the auto sector. The Taiwanese firm released their first EV prototypes in 2021 with the Model C, Model E, and Model T. Foxconn is set to begin the production of the Foxtron Model C this year.

Aside from its announced prototypes, Foxconn will venture into manufacturing electric buses and microbuses for business-to-business (B2B) purposes. Eventually, a pending battery-powered microbus model is set to be manufactured in Japan starting 2027.
