12,581 SUVs are being recalled due to a manufacturing defect that may result in an engine compartment fire even if the vehicles are switched off.

531 units of the KM-generation Kia Sportage produced from 2007 to 2009, as well as 12,050 units of the SL-generation Sportage produced from 2014 to 2015 are affected according to a vehicle recall notice released by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts.

“Due to a manufacturing defect, the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), may short circuit in the event of the components being exposed to moisture,” said the Department.“The Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) is responsible for the Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control System and Traction Control System.”

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants or bystanders and/or damage to property.”

Owners of such vehicles are encouraged to contact the nearest dealer to arrange for a free inspection and repair. Furthermore, the manufacturer warns owners to avoid parking the affected vehicles in an enclosed area or near flammable structures.
