The Takata airbag recall continues in Australia with Toyota Motor Corporation pulling its Lexus luxury sub-brand airbags in.
Takata airbags featured in IS 250 (565 vehicles), IS 250 (260 vehicles),
IS 350 (1,231 vehicles), and IS-F (100 vehicles) are included. Ten LFA supercars are also affected. See the published VIN table here.
Front passenger airbag inflators are prone to moisture intrusion over time resulting in “degradation of the inflator propellant” which expands the airbag.
The hazard is the resulting projectile metallic fragments which can injure occupants when abnormal deployment and a rupturing of the propellant cylinder casing occur.
Lexus will contact known owners directly and invite them to present their cars to Lexus Dealers to have the issue rectified once parts are available.
Premium or silver service taxi fleets which operate Lexus vehicles should notify their drivers.
Honda/Acura in the US have also joined the Takata recall saga, with models ranging back to 2001 included.
