The new-generation MG HS and the electric Chery Omoda E5 have earned five-star safety ratings from ANCAP.
The all-new MG HS has achieved the maximum 5-star safety rating when tested against ANCAP’s latest safety protocols. Meanwhile, the existing Chery Omoda 5 rating has been extended to include the recently introduced battery electric Omoda E5.
MG HS: Exceptional Scores Across the Board
The MG HS earned an impressive 90 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection. It scored full marks in side impact, oblique pole, and whiplash protection tests. Its Child Occupant Protection score reached 87 per cent, with all critical body regions rated as “good”.
It also excelled in Vulnerable Road User Protection, scoring 83 per cent. Its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system stood out, especially in car-to-motorcycle scenarios, where it achieved full points. However, the AEB Backover feature, designed to detect pedestrians while reversing, was rated as “marginal”.
The MG HS comes packed with a range of advanced safety features, including:
- Dual frontal, side chest, and side head-protecting airbags, along with a centre airbag for additional protection in side-impact crashes.
- AEB systems are capable of detecting cars, pedestrians, and cyclists in various scenarios, including junctions and head-on collisions.
- Lane support systems (LSS) with lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and emergency lane keeping.
- A speed assistance system (SAS) featuring speed sign recognition to help drivers maintain safe speeds.
The MG HS, available in petrol and diesel variants, was introduced to the Australian and New Zealand markets in August 2024. With a price range of $35,000 to $65,000, it offers medium SUV buyers a strong mix of safety and value.
ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg praised the model’s achievement.
“The previous generation MG HS achieved a five-star result against 2019 criteria. Our protocols have been upgraded twice since then, so it is positive to see MG continue to invest in the safety of the HS,” she said.
Chery Omoda E5: Electric Safety Excellence
Meanwhile, the battery electric Chery Omoda E5 extended the five-star rating awarded to the petrol model in 2022. Additional crash tests, including frontal offset and oblique pole tests, confirmed the safety and integrity of its high-voltage battery system.
Key safety features of the Omoda E5 include:
- Dual frontal, side chest, and side head-protecting airbags to safeguard occupants during crashes.
- Advanced AEB systems for collision avoidance with cars, pedestrians, and cyclists.
- Lane support systems, such as lane keep assist and emergency lane keeping.
- High-voltage battery integrity, rigorously tested for safety in crash scenarios.
“This five-star rating for the Omoda E5 will be a welcome addition to the shopping lists of consumers and fleets in the market for a five-star EV,” ANCAP said in a press release.
