Mazda’s new large SUV, the CX-80, has received a five-star safety rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP). The rating applies to all petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants of the Mazda CX-80 manufactured from July 2024 onwards.

Safety Performance Overview

The Mazda CX-80 performed well across all categories of the ANCAP safety assessment, which includes adult and child occupant protection, vulnerable road user safety, and safety assist features.

  • Adult Occupant Protection: The CX-80 scored 92 per cent, excelling in side impact, oblique pole, and whiplash protection tests. In the frontal offset test, the vehicle showed strong protection for both the driver and rear occupant, though the driver’s chest protection was rated as adequate.
  • Child Occupant Protection: The vehicle earned 87 per cent for child occupant protection, providing good protection for all key body regions of child dummies during frontal and side impact tests.
  • Vulnerable Road User Protection: The CX-80 achieved 84 per cent, offering good protection for pedestrians’ pelvis, femur, and lower legs in various impact scenarios.

Safety Technologies

The Mazda CX-80 is equipped with several safety technologies aimed at preventing accidents and protecting occupants. The Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system performed well in most forward collision scenarios. However, it performed poorly in detecting crossing cyclists during left-hand turns and motorcyclists in turning scenarios.

The vehicle’s Lane Support System (LSS), which includes lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and emergency lane keeping, earned full points for its functionality.

Additional Features

All Mazda CX-80 variants come with standard safety features, including dual frontal airbags and side chest and head airbags. These airbags are provided for all three rows of seating. It also has a driver knee airbag and a centre airbag for added protection in side-impact crashes. Advanced safety assist features include AEB for car-to-car, vulnerable road user, junction, and crossing scenarios. The vehicle also includes a speed assistance system with speed sign recognition.

Mazda released the CX-80 for sale in Australia in October 2024 and in New Zealand in November 2024. The vehicle is available in various trims, with pricing varying depending on the engine and specifications.
