Indonesia’s car sales have finally improved since June 2023, by a slight 2.2 per cent. Car sales recorded for February 2025 reached 72,295 units sold, according to officials from The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industires (GAIKINDO).
A LONG-AWAITED IMPROVEMENT
For the first time in over a year, Indonesia’s car sales have finally improved on-year but only by a slight 2.2 per cent. The year 2024, in retrospect, may not have been Indonesia’s strongest year in car sales.
According to Reuters, this slight growth was largely driven by electric vehicle (EV) sales. Thanks to the presence of Chinese EV makers in the country, affordable vehicle options for Indonesians are more accessible. GAIKINDO Chairman, Jongkie D. Sugiarto also attributes the rise in car sales to an improving Indonesian economy.
BYD entered the Indonesian market last June of 2024. Since then, the company has dominated EV sales in the country. Since November last year, BYD has held a third of the share of Indonesia’s EV market. Following BYD is Chery Automobile, a fellow Chinese EV maker.
JAPANESE CARMAKERS AT LARGE
However, Japanese automakers are still dominant in the Indonesian car market. Together, they sold 62,123 units, almost 86 per cent of February 2025’s total sales.
Among them, Toyota sold the most with 24,397 units sold, excluding sales from sub-brand Lexus. The company improved by 10 per cent compared to the previous month and by 4.4 per cent on-year.
Following Toyota is Daihatsu, which sold 11,959 vehicles in February. The brand is down 20.7 per cent on-year in sales, but up 19.8 per cent month-over-month.
Mitsubishi’s sales increased significantly by 11.5 per cent on-year with 6,684 vehicles sold. However, several Japanese automakers decreased in sales, most especially Isuzu. Isuzu’s sales are 15.2 per cent down on-year with only 1,903 vehicles sold last month. This is a large difference compared to Suzuki and Mitsubishi Fuso whose sales are down by 4.9 per cent and 6.5 per cent respectively. Suzuki sold 4,750 vehicles to dealers while Mitsubishi sold 2,106 units.
GAIKINDO projects 900,000 vehicles will be sold overall by the end of the year. This comes after a disappointing turn out of 865,723 vehicle sales recorded for the year 2024.
