The Hyundai Motor Group and Motional have unveiled the new IONIQ 5 Robotaxi which is a zero-emissions fully autonomous vehicle that will operate through a partnership with Lyft.
The IONIQ 5 Robotaxi represents the future of transportation as it combines an electric vehicle and fully autonomous systems making it a safe driverless option of transport.
In 2023 commuters using the Lyft transport service will be able to ride in the Robotaxi.
With a combination of cameras, radars, and lidar the Robotaxi is capable of full 360-degree detection which is processed by advanced machine learning systems allowing the vehicle to navigate complex road situations free of a driver.
The safety of passengers is often the largest question surrounding autonomous vehicles, Hyundai and Motional have addressed this through several safety redundancies across systems such as the navigation, steering, braking, and power.
“For the IONIQ 5-based robotaxi, we have applied various redundancy systems, in addition to a suite of essential technologies to ensure safety and convenience of the passengers,” said Woongjun Jang, Head of the Autonomous Driving Centre at Hyundai Motor Group.
Motional’s advanced driverless technology paired with Hyundai’s years of experienced vehicle manufacturing, the IONIQ 5 Robotaxi has been presented as an option for worldwide commercialisation in fleet.
“This deep collaboration enables us to manufacture a robotaxi that’s both highly safe and reliable and is cost-optimised for global production. We’re focused on mass commercialisation, and the IONIQ 5 robotaxi is built for that purpose,” Motional President and CEO, Karl Lagnemma said.
“This robotaxi represents Motional’s vision of a driverless future becoming a reality.”
