Geely has made a strong entrance into the Australian and New Zealand automotive markets. Its all-electric EX5 Medium SUV has secured a five-star safety rating from ANCAP in its first assessment.

The EX5, on sale in Australia from March 2025 and in New Zealand from April 2025, is Geely’s first vehicle to undergo independent ANCAP testing. It impressed across key safety areas, delivering high levels of occupant protection and advanced safety technology.

Strong Safety Across the Board

In physical crash tests, the EX5 scored full marks in the side impact, whiplash, and far-side impact tests. However, during the frontal offset (MPDB) test, ANCAP noted that some welds around the base of the A-pillar became detached. Although Geely demonstrated that its structural integrity held up in a more severe follow-up test, a penalty was still applied due to the initial findings.

The EX5 scored 86 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, while Child Occupant Protection achieved an impressive 87 per cent. Full points were awarded for protection of 6-year-old and 10-year-old dummies in most categories, though neck protection for the older dummy in the MPDB test was rated Adequate.

The EX5 also includes a direct child presence detection (CPD) system as standard, but it did not meet ANCAP’s performance requirements and received no points in that area.

Advanced Driver Assistance

The Geely EX5 received praise for its crash avoidance technology, with many scenarios tested rated as Good. It features autonomous emergency braking (AEB) for cars, pedestrians, cyclists, junctions, backover and head-on scenarios. A comprehensive lane support system and advanced speed assistance are also standard.

Safety Assist scored 85 per cent, while Vulnerable Road User Protection scored 83 per cent.

A Confident Start for Geely

“Geely has made a confident entrance into the Australian and New Zealand markets with the Geely EX5, landing a five-star result right out of the gate,” said ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg.

“The Geely EX5 delivers good overall safety performance and sets a benchmark for Geely’s local presence.”

All variants of the Geely EX5 fall within the $35,000 – $65,000 price bracket and come equipped with dual frontal, side chest-protecting, side head-protecting, and centre airbags.

The five-star safety rating applies to all EX5 variants built from January 2025 onwards and is valid through to December 2031.
