Extreme E, the motorsport series that combines electric racing with environmental sustainability, has announced updates to its Season 4 calendar. This comes as the series prepares for its transition to Extreme H, the world’s first hydrogen-powered racing series, set to launch in 2025.
Due to this transition, the championship is reviewing alternative solutions for its remaining rounds, originally scheduled for Sardinia, Italy, and Phoenix, USA. The series is currently focusing their efforts into the development of Extreme H. This will feature the innovative hydrogen-powered Pioneer 25 racing car.
Commitment to Hydrogen Racing
Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Extreme E, reaffirmed the series’ dedication to becoming the first-ever hydrogen racing series.
“As we continue our transition to Extreme H, we are fully committed to becoming the world’s first hydrogen racing series,” Agag said.
“The investment and progress in the innovations are in full flow. Excitement grows every day as the industry turns its head towards the possibilities hydrogen presents.”
Agag also expressed the importance of finishing Extreme E’s final season while prioritising Extreme H’s development.
“We want to find a conclusion to Extreme E that allows us to finish what we started. At the same time, we aim to commit maximum resources to Extreme H.”
Extreme E expressed appreciation to the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI), Regione Sardegna, the Italian military, and the Phoenix team for their support and understanding. The series remains open to future collaborations with these partners and is working on alternative solutions for the final events of the season.
Milestone Achievements for Extreme H
The development of Extreme H is progressing rapidly. In August, the hydrogen-powered Pioneer 25 racing car reached a significant milestone by passing the FIA crash tests. This makes the Pioneer 25 the first-ever hydrogen-powered car to meet the FIA’s crash test regulations, marking a major step forward for the series and motorsport innovation.
The next steps for the Pioneer 25 include undergoing FIA resilience tests for its tanks and battery packs. They have scheduled additional track testing in September and October. Production of the Extreme H cars for the inaugural season will begin in the coming weeks. Teams are expected to receive deliveries by the end of 2024.
