3,832 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold in January 2025 according to the latest data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC). The EV figures were split between two major sources: 3,011 EVs from the FCAI, and 821 EVs supplied by Tesla and Polestar, as reported by the EVC.
This represents 4.4 per cent of the overall market, lower than the same period last year when EVs made up 5.5 per cent of total sales.
Tesla’s Model Y Continues to Lead
Despite a 33 per cent drop in overall Tesla sales, the Model Y remained the best-selling electric vehicle in Australia for January. This is despite the dramatic drop in the brand’s overall numbers, which are now just a quarter of what they were in January 2023.
The recent launch of the refreshed Model Y, along with price cuts, helped boost sales. The Model Y accounted for 465 sales, just ahead of the MG4, which sold 440 units in January.
Kia made a notable entry into the top three, with its EV5 claiming the third spot with 289 sales, just ahead of the Tesla Model 3, which recorded 274 sales. Rounding out the top five was the Audi Q4 e-tron, with 121 sales.
While the Model Y held strong, other EVs in the market saw mixed results. For example, the BYD Atto 3, which had been a popular model in the past, only saw 105 sales in January, a clear drop from its previous numbers.
The BYD Dolphin, a smaller EV from the Chinese brand, sold just 85 units, and the BYD Seal, which had been one of the top sellers for the brand, saw only 52 sales.
New Entrants and Other Notable Sales
There were some new entrants in the EV market in January. Volkswagen’s ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs, which had been long anticipated, were finally released and combined for just 32 sales.
The ID.Buzz, Volkswagen’s electric van, sold 21 units. Despite these new additions, they didn’t make a huge impact on overall sales.
Interestingly, Toyota’s bZ4X, which has become the top-selling EV in Norway, only sold 80 units in Australia, not even making it to the top 10 for the month.
