The AfMA Fleet Awards are set to return to Melbourne next year as a feature of the 2019 Fleet Conference & Exhibition.
AfMA supports innovation and excellence in Fleet Management, and the Awards seek to identify advances in best practice in Fleet Management and to bring these to the attention of its members and the industry.
Since their introduction in 1996 the Awards have recognised new approaches and applications that have produced substantial reductions in costs, lowered emissions and improved safety outcomes.
Drawing attention to advances in fleet management techniques, the application of technology, fleet safety and raising awareness of the fleets impact on the environment, the Awards have inspired many to begin their own voyage towards best practice.
We look forward to expressions of interest from organisations and individuals from right around Australia and New Zealand. In the meantime here is a look back at the amazing achievements of our 2017 winners.
2017 Fleet Manager of the Year Award – Peter Armour (Life Without Barriers)
AfMA is delighted to recognise Peter Armour as our 2017 Fleet Manager of the Year. Peter has served as the National Fleet Manager of Life Without Barriers since May 2014, following a 12-year stint with the Gosford City Council.
Over the past three years, Peter has been tasked with internalising fleet management operations, and for establishing new policies and procedures within the organisation.
“The review found the issues to be onerous and they all needed to be fixed as soon as possible,” Peter said.
“I was employed to implement all of these changes as part of the change to insourced fleet management. This combined with the size and spread of the fleet across all corners of the country presented many additional challenges.”
2017 Fleet Environment Award – Richard Schuster (Churches of Christ in Queensland)
The 2017 Fleet Environment Award has been awarded to the Churches of Christ in Queensland for their outstanding contributions within the sector.
Under the leadership of Group Manager Procurement, Fleet and Sustainability Richard Schuster, the organisation set out to strengthen their commitment to the environment from its fleet through a variety of successful initiatives.
“As a Christian organisation believing that God created this world and put humans in charge of caring for it, it was agreed that we could do a lot better job in our caretaker role,” Mr Schuster said.
“Caring for people extends further than just caring for their immediate needs, it means ensuring that their future on this planet, and their children’s future, is not only assured but is improved in terms of quality.”
2017 Fleet Safety Award – Nicky Bree (Tourism Holdings Australia Pty Ltd)
It is with great pleasure that AfMA awards our 2017 Fleet Safety Award to Tourism Holdings Australia Pty Ltd (thl).
The company holds the title as the largest campervan and motorhome rental fleet globally. In Australia alone the business serviced over 50,000 customers over 28,000 vehicles within 2014, across a total fleet size of over 1400 vehicles.
While Tourism Holdings Australia was thriving from a financial and operational perspective, the company had an opportunity to improve insurance, repair and maintenance costs and were always on the look out to improve safety. The introduction of telematics seemed to be a possible solution to both.
“In late 2014, we started installing telematics devices and TomTom screens to all vehicles in order to have better communication with our customers, reduce the number of accidents, and reduce repair and maintenance costs through influencing their driver behaviour,” Nicky Bree, Tourism Holdings Australia Commercial Fleet Manager said
