Australia’s used car market experienced a 14.8 per cent increase in March 2025, with a total of 200,566 units sold. According to the latest Automotive Insights Report (AIR), this represents steady growth for the last three months against a backdrop of falling supply.

Total active listings declined by 4.7 per cent nationally, with six out of eight states and territories seeing fewer used cars available on the market.

Despite stronger sales, the average time it took to sell a used car increased to 51.3 days. This is the highest figure since November 2023.

Most states posted solid sales gains, led by the ACT at 24.6 per cent, followed by New South Wales (19.3 per cent) and Victoria (17.0 per cent).

Utes and Japanese Brands Lead the Pack

As in previous months, dual-cab Utes and trusted Japanese brands continued to dominate. The Ford Ranger held onto its crown as the top-selling used vehicle in Australia for the 19th consecutive month, closely followed by the Toyota Hilux. Toyota also maintained a strong presence overall, claiming five of the top ten selling spots.

One standout performer was the Suzuki Jimny, which led the market in retained value at a remarkable 114 per cent. Its cult-like following and limited availability have helped it punch above its weight in resale value.

EV Market Grows Despite Fewer Listings

Used electric vehicle sales also increased to 11.6 per cent in March. This came even as EV listings fell by 3.5 per cent, suggesting buyers remain interested in second-hand electric models, particularly as new EVs remain relatively expensive.
