Four commercial vans sold in Australia have received updated safety ratings as part of the latest round of testing from ANCAP. The LDV Deliver 7 and Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo both earned Platinum ratings. Meanwhile, the Renault Trafic and Peugeot Expert have been upgraded to Gold following recent specification enhancements.
Platinum Ratings for Newcomers
The LDV Deliver 7 debuted with a Platinum safety rating and an overall score of 86 per cent. The diesel-powered van outperformed its electric sibling, the eDeliver 7 by offering higher-level Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functionality. Testing showed strong results, particularly in scenarios involving automatic emergency braking at intersections.
Also entering the safety comparison for the first time is the all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo. It scored 80 per cent, earning a Platinum rating for its robust active safety suite, which includes effective AEB car-to-car functionality and lane support systems.
“With the LDV Deliver 7 and Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo achieving strong results on debut into our commercial van assessment program, it’s clear that safety is being prioritised by manufacturers bringing new-generation vans to market,” said Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP Chief Executive Officer.
A Step Up to Gold Rating
The Renault Trafic and Peugeot Expert have both seen their safety gradings rise from Silver to GOld, following upgrades to models built from October 2024.
The Renault Trafic scored 69 per cent and now includes features like pedestrian and cyclist-detecting AEB. Although it features a lane departure warning system, it lacks active lane keep assist. This is a significant improvement from the Trafic’s 2020 assessment, which resulted in a “Not Recommended” rating.
Meanwhile, the Peugeot Expert is now equipped with AEB car-to-cyclist and active lane support as standard, earning it an overall score of 67 per cent. These updates helped boost its performance in key assessment areas such as lane support and speed assistance.
“It’s great to see active steps being taken to improve the safety specification of these vans, and the tangible results of those efforts. The elevation of the Renault Trafic and Peugeot Expert to GOLD shows excellent progress,” said Ms Hoorweg.
Ongoing Market Improvements
The latest results reflect broader improvements across the commercial van segment since ANCAP introduced its dedicated safety comparison program. There are now eight current van models on the Australian market with a Platinum safety rating.
“Since our Commercial Van Safety Comparison was introduced, we have seen clear improvements across the commercial van market. Today, eight current van models hold a PLATINUM rating,” Ms Hoorweg added.
ANCAP’s Commercial Van Safety Comparison program is a parallel initiative to its traditional star rating system. It evaluates the presence and performance of active safety features, specifically ADAS, across commercial vans in the NA and NB vehicle categories. It does not include destructive crash testing and does not alter existing ANCAP star ratings.
Full safety performance details for all assessed vans are available on the ANCAP website.
