New passenger vehicle sales in New Zealand rose by 11.4 per cent in March 2025, reaching 8,426 units compared to 7,561 units in the same period last year. 

Toyota remained the market leader with 1,711 registrations, an 8 per cent increase from 1,584 units in March 2024. Kia followed with 851 registrations, while Mitsubishi recorded 822. 

Honda New Zealand had a strong end to the financial year, climbing to fifth place with 555 registrations, a 75 per cent increase from 318 units last year. Mazda also performed well, growing 56 per cent to 422 units, while MG saw a 32 per cent rise to 404 registrations. Suzuki (400), Nissan (289), Ford (288), and Hyundai (281) rounded out the top ten. 

Passenger Car Sales 

The Toyota RAV4 remained New Zealand’s best-selling passenger vehicle with 703 registrations in March 2025. The Mitsubishi ASX followed with 364 units, while the Mitsubishi Outlander recorded 352. Other popular models included the Kia Seltos (295), Toyota Corolla (218), Suzuki Swift (188), MG ZS (185), Mazda CX-5 (176), Toyota Corolla Cross (167), and Ford Everest (165). 

Commercial Vehicle Sales Decline 

New commercial vehicle registrations in New Zealand dropped 14 per cent in March 2025, with 3,490 units sold compared to 4,043 in March 2024. Toyota was the only brand to see growth, leading with 861 units. Ford followed with 818, while Mitsubishi recorded 488. Nissan (383), BYD (169), Isuzu (131), LDV(111), Fuso (56), Volkswagen (47), and GWM (43) completed the top ten. 

The Ford Ranger remained the top-selling commercial vehicle with 709 registrations. It was followed by the Toyota Hilux (669), Mitsubishi Triton (488), Nissan Navara (383), BYD Shark 6 (169), Toyota Hiace (157), Ford Transit (109), Isuzu D-Max (74), LDV T60 (46), and GWM Cannon (43).
