MIDA recently joined Geely and DRB-HICOM group to develop the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV) in Perak, Malaysia. The three organisations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) inmid-December of 2024.

The AHTV

The AHTV will be built in Tanjung Malim in Malaysia’s Perak region. This valley was conceptualised to aid Malaysia’s efforts in becoming a global hub for vehicle production and technology. Malaysia’s goals are not just for vehicles in general, but for next-generation (NxGV) and energy-efficient vehicles (EEV) specifically. According to Geely’s official statement, the high-tech valley will include “advanced research and development facilities, state-of-the-art manufacturing units, and supportive services like logistics and training.”

The project was initially signed by Geely and DRB-HICOMN in December 2023, until MIDA joined the fray the next year. MIDA released the following statement in their announcement: “The partnership emphasises strategic investments and the establishment of a comprehensive ecosystem to position AHTV as a hub of automotive innovation in ASEAN.”

Malaysia’s high hopes

Malaysia hopes that this project will also boost its local automotive industry. This collaboration between the government and global corporations is part of the country’s efforts to integrate EV adoption for both motorists and the local industry. The country also hopes that these investments will also improve research and innovation for its technological advancement and productivity.

“This partnership reflects Malaysia’s readiness to not only tech up but also lead the region’s transition to sustainable mobility while equipping our workforce with the right skills to elevate Malaysia’s overall productivity,” said Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.

Furthermore, MIDA is also confident in this move as it provides more opportunities for Malaysia to improve its sustainability practices. “This collaboration enables us to harness Industry 4.0 and energy-efficient solutions to create a dynamic ecosystem at AHTV that supports innovation and sustainability,” said MIDA CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid.

Geely, DBR-HICOM, and MIDA signed the MOU at a ceremonial exchange during the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC).
