Indonesia’s state electric company PLN announced a collaboration with EV manufacturer BYD to bring better charging services to the country. The organisations announced this during the Jakarta Auto Week 2024 (GJAW 2024) last December 1.
PLN’S PLAN
This partnership with BYD will be one of many for PLN. The organisation plans to engage in more to support Indonesia’s shift to zero-emission vehicles. This joint venture is key to alleviating air pollution in the archipelago, which is exacerbated by the use of poor-quality fuels.
Through this collaboration, PLN and BYD have agreed to create a study for the development of Indonesia’s local charging network and other EV infrastructures nationwide. Furthermore, PLN hopes that an “after-sales service” from this joint venture will educate and assist Indonesian customers in the care and use of their new EVs.
“We all realize how important the role of the transport sector is in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through this collaboration, we are not only committed to supporting the utilization of environmentally friendly technology in the society, but also accelerating the energy transition,” Darmawan Prasodjo, PLN’s President Director said.
THE EV SHIFT IN INDONESIA
This isn’t the first time BYD and PLN came together to support Indonesia’s EV shift. Earlier this year, PLN purchased 10,000 electric vehicles from BYD. PLN intends for these EVs to become part of its own fleet of operational vehicles. The distribution of the vehicles ordered will occur over the course of 5 years with “a network of dealers.”
“BYD is committed to facilitating the acceleration of the transition to the era of electrification vehicles in Indonesia not only through the innovation of the New Energy Vehicle but also with an ecosystem that can facilitate the availability of units for many parties,” said Eagle Zhao, President Director of BYD Motor Indonesia.
Currently, there are no further details on the joint venture. For more information, Indonesian citizens can access the project through the PLN app.
