The new Toyota Camry has earned a 5-star safety rating from ANCAP, Australasia’s vehicle safety authority. This rating applies to all hybrid models of the Camry, available in New Zealand from August 2024 and in Australia from September 2024.
The Camry performed very well in Adult Occupant Protection, scoring 95 per cent. It received top marks in several crash tests, including side-impact, oblique pole, whiplash, and far-side impact. These results mean the Camry offers strong protection for passengers. In tests that measured the risk to passengers from oncoming vehicles, the Camry lost only 0.96 points out of 8.00.
In the Child Occupant Protection category, the Camry earned 87 per cent. It provided good head protection in frontal and side crashes. The vehicle can fit a wide range of child restraints, though a few baby and booster seats did not fit in certain rear seats.
For Vulnerable Road User Protection, the Camry scored 84 per cent. This reflects its ability to protect pedestrians. The car’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system, which is standard in all models, worked well to avoid or reduce accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. However, the AEB’s reverse function (AEB Backover) was not tested, since it’s not turned on by default.
In terms of Safety Assist, the Camry scored 81 per cent. This score is thanks to several advanced safety features, including:
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB): Helps prevent collisions with other cars, pedestrians, and cyclists. It also has junction assist for turning accidents.
- Lane Support Systems (LSS): These include lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW), and emergency lane keeping (ELK), which help keep the car in its lane.
- Speed Assistance System (SAS): Uses speed sign recognition to help drivers maintain safe speeds.
- Airbags: The Camry comes with dual frontal, side chest, side head-protecting, and a driver’s knee airbag. A centre airbag offers extra protection for front passengers during side impacts.
