Western Australia (WA) will be investing a further $5.2 million in the Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) rebate scheme as part of its 2024-2025 State Budget.
Ever since introducing the ZEV rebate in 2022, sales of EVSs in WA have quadrupled. As of March 31, 2024, over 5,900 ZEV rebate applications have been processed for EV owners in WA, amounting to almost $20.7 million.
Under the ZEV scheme, individuals purchasing eligible vehicles can claim a $3,500 rebate by applying to the Department of Transport. The application window remains open until midnight on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Eligible vehicles must meet specific criteria. The zero-emission vehicle must be powered solely by batteries or hydrogen fuel cells, must be a light vehicle with a gross vehicle mass of 4.5 tonnes or less, and must have a maximum dutiable value of $70,000 or less.
Additionally, these vehicles must be brand new and have never been registered or licensed in Australia or overseas.
The ZEV Rebate Scheme is part of the Government’s Clean Energy Car Fund and serves as a financial incentive to promote the purchase of zero-emission vehicles.
Impact of the ZEV Rebate Scheme
In a press release, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti highlighted the impact of the rebate scheme on the increasing adoption of electric vehicles.
“We’ve seen huge growth in the number of Western Australians purchasing electric vehicles and our rebate scheme is one of the reasons we’re seeing such a high take-up. We know the cost can make electric vehicles prohibitive for many people, but these rebates are helping to make it more affordable and increasing demand within WA,” she says.
Meanwhile, Minister Assisting the Transport Minister David Michael lauded the positive response the ZEV Rebate Scheme has garnered from the public.
“Since the State Government announced the Zero Emissions Vehicle rebate in the 2022-23 State Budget, more than 6,500 rebate applications have been received and more than 100,000 people have sought further information on the Department of Transport website,” he said
“The number of Western Australians purchasing ZEVs has exceeded expectations, and the Cook Government is pleased to be able to allocate another $5.2 million to the ZEV Rebate Scheme to enable more drivers to take up the rebate,” he added.
