Volkswagen’s battery electric Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.5 sold in New Zealand have received 5-star safety ratings from ANCAP. Both models were tested against ANCAP’s 2020-2022 rating criteria and scored well across a range of independent safety tests and assessments.
“New Zealand has been working hard to increase the availability of alternative-powered new vehicles into its fleet, and these two new five-star ratings will assist with shift towards newer, safer and greener model choices,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg.
“It is good to see Volkswagen’s new ID models arrive in to New Zealand with five-star ANCAP safety ratings.”
“We’d encourage Volkswagen to consider including speed limit information functionality in future upgrades, to ensure all buyers are provided with the same level of safety specification as offered in the European market,” Ms Hoorweg added.
Performance in Safety Tests
All the SUV’s models demonstrated strong performance in Adult Occupant Protection with a score of 93%.
The vehicles achieved high scores in frontal and side impact crash tests as well as in vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility. However, the sideways movement of the front seat occupant in the vehicle-to-pole far side impact test was relatively high.
It also scored full marks in Child Occupant Protection particularly in frontal offset and side impact crash tests. ANCAP notes that “ID.4 and ID.5 supplied in New Zealand are not fitted with child restraint anchorages in the centre rear seating position and these seating positions should not be used to transport younger children.”
Furthermore, the ID.4 and ID.5 demonstrated an Adequate performance ability to automatically detect and respond to pedestrians and cyclists. It also recorded an Adequate level of performance in active emergency lane-keeping (ELK) functionality, with a Good score recorded for active lane keep assist (LKA).
New Zealand-supplied models of the ID.4 and ID.5 are not equipped with a speed limit information function (SLIF) which use in-built cameras and/or map data to establish the local speed limit unlike those supplied in Europe. It also advises the driver so that the speed of the vehicle can be adjusted to suit the sign-posted speed. Because of this, the vehicles achieved a Safety Assist score of 76%.
Safety Features
The ID.4 and ID.5 features dual frontal, side chest-protecting and side head-protecting (curtain) airbags. A centre airbag which provides added protection to front seat occupants in side impact crashes is also standard.
Also standard across all variants are autonomous emergency braking (Car-to-Car, Vulnerable Road User and Junction Assist) as well as a lane support system with lane keep assist (LKA), lane departure warning (LDW) and emergency lane keeping (ELK), and blind spot monitoring (BSM).
