South Australia’s iconic Bay to Birdwood run is back this year with an electric twist—EV converted historic vehicles will now be featured in this historic motoring event.
Cars dating back form the early 1900s will be taking on a 70-kilometre journey from the coast to the Adelaide Hills.
The move to include electric-converted classic vehicles in the event highlights the shift within historic vehicle circles.
“By doing this we are actually saving some vehicles that would have been lost to us,” Organiser Michael Neale said.
“If you look at who’s doing the Bay to Birdwood today there’s a lot of younger people, men and women,” added Mr Neale.
“I’ve only had two people express concern about it but that was more-so about if we can still maintain the historic integrity of these vehicles.
“Majority of people I’ve spoken to believe this an incredible piece of leadership.
“We are paving the way for a broader understanding of what a historical vehicle is.”
Last year’s Bay to Birdwood Run was cancelled due to COVID-19. But now that it’s back this year, the organisers are hoping for record numbers.
“It’s back on the streets of Adelaide, 1,500 vehicles making their way,” Mr Neale said.
“During COVID, 90,000 people turned up on the streets of Adelaide [2020]. I would love for there to be 120,000 this year.”
